Instagram announced Thursday that it was using artificial intelligence to filter out unpleasant comments and spam in the popular photo sharing service belonging to Facebook .
This move comes at a time when Facebook and other Internet companies are working to prevent unpleasant messages , discourses that incite hatred and spread violent ideologies on their platforms.
“Many of you have told us that toxic comments discourage you from enjoying Instagram and expressing yourself freely,” co-founder and CEO Kevin Systrom announced in a post on his blog.
“To help, we’ve developed a filter that blocks certain offensive comments in posts and videos .”
This filter will be launched first in English and eventually other languages will be added, according to Systrom.
Instagram also announced that its spam filter is designed to work in Arabic, Chinese, English, French, German, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish .
“Our team has been preparing our systems for some time to recognize certain types of offensive comments and spam so the user does not have to see them,” he added.
” The tools will improve over time, ” he said.
Facebook, Microsoft, Twitter and YouTube announced this week the launch of an anti-terror alliance aimed at preventing the proliferation of extremist content online.
Each of the technology giants has been working individually to prevent their platforms and services from being used to promote or spread extremist views .
