How to use Snapchat. Everything you need to know about this social network

Snapchat is one of the applications that has grown the most in recent years. Every month around 150 million people download it from their smartphone or tablet. Do you want to know what the value proposition it offers? The main difference with Facebook, Google+, Twitter and other social networks is that Snapchat users send messages, photos and videos that are deleted within seconds of being seen (after 24 hours also disappear from the recipient’s screen and are deleted Of your cell phone). The fact that the information uploaded is ephemeral and self-destructive is irresistible for the new generation of millennials. Now we will tell you everything you need to know to start using this social network.

Initial screen and profile editing

When you start the application you will notice that the camera is already activated and ready to take pictures or videos. However, you can perform other actions before you begin this process. The “ghost” that is located above and in the center of the screen takes you to your profile. Once you press that icon, Snapchat shows you the photo with which you will see other users that use this social network and just below a menu with other notifications. The first is a happy little face that, when pressed, will indicate who added you to your directory recently. Then you have the option of “Add other friends” (looking for them in your contact list, by username and also by proximity). Finally, the icon titled “My friends” appears. In this section all the friends that already use Snapchat appear and added to your contact list of the application. Three pictures appear on the top of your profile photo. The first is a question mark that when you press it will detail tips for better use of the tool and news about new features. In the center is a trophy that indicates all the achievements you have made by using Snapchat and posting content. At the top right of the screen there is a nut that will take you to the different configurations of the application. To take a picture you just have to press the button below and the center of the screen. If you want to get a selfie you must click on the arrows above to the right to activate the front camera. You can also activate the flash with the beam that appears in the upper left of the screen. When you finish you can add filters – similar to those of Instagram – sliding your fingers to the left or right. You also have the option to include text if you click once on the “T” in the upper right of the screen. If you make two quick clicks on the same icon you can enlarge the letter or change the color to your message. To add emoticons to your image you only have to press the little paper that appears top right just to the left of the “T”. Once you insert them into your creation you can enlarge them using your fingers to stretch them to the size you want. You can also draw anything on the photo. This is done by pressing the pencil icon located at the top right and drawing with your finger over any area of the image. If you press the circular icon on the bottom right you can select the number of seconds you want your photo to be displayed. Just to the right side of that icon appears an arrow pointing down that serves to save your creation in the gallery of the social network. Once you finish the edition you can publish your story (so the entries in this application are called) by clicking on the square with a “+” sign located below and in the center of the screen.

Videos

To record a video you just have to hold the same button you used to take the pictures. Clips can last up to 10 seconds and also include audio. The editing process is exactly the same as the images except that in the videos you will see a new sound icon for you to decide if you want your creation to be published with audio or without it. Some functions like changing the image sense are only available for certain smartphone models. It is always good to check the news on the Snapchat website to find out about these additions.

Stories and other features

If you slide your fingers to the left in the initial screen, the histories tab opens. In this section you can see the entries you recently published by clicking on the “My History” option or browse the content that other people or brands uploaded. To see the latest stories published by companies with presence in Snapchat you have to click on the circular icon located at the top and right of the screen or the logos of the brands that appear under the title “Discover”. You can also investigate events that are being recorded at the time of your connection by pressing the circles below the text that reads “Live.” Finally, the stories published by your friends appear under “Recent Updates”.

If someone else does a screenshot of your story, the application will send you a notification so that you know who the user was. To pass a story that does not interest you only have to touch once on the screen and the application will take you to the next publication of the user or company. In case you want to share a publication with your friends just keep your finger on the screen while a video or a photo is displayed and then click on the arrow in the lower left. This will open a menu with the contact list and you can select the people that want to send the content to you (you can also edit it like any other Snapchat creation).
